Test Your Knowledge - Electrical safety

Which statement is FALSE regarding electric safety?

A. It's best to use equipment with grounded three-pronged plugs.
B. Extension cords should be covered with a rug to prevent tripping.
C. You should stop using an electric cord that is frayed or feels hot.
D. It's not okay to use extension cords permanently, even if your building doesn't have enough wiring.

B. The correct answer is B. Extension cords should not be placed where they might become a tripping hazard, or hanging off of surfaces where they could be pulled down. But using a rug to cover a cord as tripping precaution is an even worse idea! Friction from people walking on the rug damages the cord's insulation, increasing the risk of fire.
