Disposing of Mercury Blood Pressure Cuffs

Q: How should we dispose of mercury blood pressure cuffs? Our practice is located in north Florida.

A: Place your mercury containing blood pressure cuffs in a container marked "mercury for recycling". Many communities have a recycling drop off at local fire departments, libraries etc. You may also call the district office of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to find out where mercury-recycling drives are taking place. Call (850) 595-8360 for the Northwest FL District or (904) 807-3371 for the Northeast FL District.

For more information on hazardous substance disposal check out consult Tab 8 of the Quality America OSHA Safety Program Manual. Dental facilities will find these details in Tab 5 of the Dental OSHA Safety Program Manual.
