New Employee Considerations
Q: We're trying to figure out which rules and regulations apply to new healthcare employees at our facility. What are some of the guidelines for new employees?
A: All new employees should be oriented to the building evacuation routes and know how to activate the fire alarm. Also, training on operating the fire extinguisher should be provided if the employee will be expected to use the fire extinguisher -- teach the P.A.S.S. technique.
An initial 2-step TB skin test should be performed on all employee who have not had previous documented negative results within the last 12 months.
New clinical employees need to receive OSHA bloodborne pathogens training with in 10 days of employment, and also be offered the hepatitis B vaccine series if not already vaccinated.
